About Sierra Norte de Puebla Biosphere Reserve

Located in the northeastern part of Puebla state, the Sierra Norte de Puebla Biosphere Reserve preserves a dramatic landscape dominated by rugged mountains, deep canyons, and dense forests that are part of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The reserve encompasses a mosaic of ecosystems including cloud forests, pine-oak woodlands, and tropical deciduous forests, providing vital habitat for an impressive variety of plants and wildlife. It is home to numerous endemic and endangered species such as the black bear, jaguarundi, neotropical otter, and native birds like the military macaw and the tufted jay. The region has a rich cultural history, inhabited by indigenous Nahua and Totonac communities who have sustainably managed these forests for centuries. Visitors to the Sierra Norte de Puebla can enjoy diverse outdoor activities including multi-day hiking along rugged trails connecting traditional villages, birdwatching in pristine habitats, and exploring ancient archeological sites and natural rock formations. Notable landmarks include the impressive Pahuatlán Waterfalls, the scenic valleys surrounding the village of Cuetzalan, and the archaeological ruins of Yohualichan. The reserve’s remote and less-visited nature appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquility, ecological diversity, and authentic cultural experiences, especially within community eco-tourism projects that promote conservation and sustainable livelihoods. With relatively mild year-round temperatures, well-marked trails, and opportunities for camping and mountain biking, Sierra Norte de Puebla offers a unique blend of natural beauty and heritage in Mexico’s mountainous heartland.
